The “Someday Studio”

Local artist, Melissa, had a lifelong dream of having her “Someday Studio.” For years, she created and showed her art in the cramped 2-car garage sharing the space with the miscellaneous gear of family life.. Though Melissa and her husband, John, often envisioned their "Someday Studio”, it remained a project that they just weren’t ready to tackle.

During the installation of their backyard retaining walls, Aaron Garfinkel from Aaron Garfinkel Landscapes suggested putting a building on the back corner of their property. This suggestion was the spark that reignited their interest in building a studio. A prefab building wasn’t an option. This led Melissa to Pinterest where she found a treehouse-style design that was cost-effective and suitable for the lay out of the property.

The final push to build the studio came when Melissa and John unexpectedly received some salvaged doors and windows from a friend.

The salvaged doors and windows were carefully adjusted, trimmed, and fitted to the studio's measurements. Some windows were resized to create smaller clearstory windows.

Inside, the subfloor was sanded and sealed, allowing Melissa to create art without worrying about a delicate floor.

The windows and doors can be opened to invite the sounds of the Boardwalk and capture the shifting light as the sun sets.

Salvaged lumber from Craigslist was pieced together for the siding, and tin metal was used for the roof. The exterior was stained and distressed, giving the studio a vintage, lived-in look.

Melissa commissioned local artist, Susana Arias, to create a set of oversized thumbtacks showcased above the studio door.

Now completed, the studio has been a satisfying achievement for Melissa and John. Their next venture? Transforming the garage into a dedicated man cave.
